CONGRATULATIONS to Syringa Middle School’s very own Ruby Glick!
Ruby Glick is an 8th grader at Syringa Middle School. Sometime in November her ELA class was given an essay assignment. Their theme was "The America I Believe In". Her teacher, Mrs. Moylan, selected a few essays from her classes and submitted them to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Youth Scholarship annual PATRIOT'S PEN essay contest.
Ruby placed 3rd out of over 1,000 essay entries in Idaho! Ruby said her dad was her motivation behind her essay. “My dad was in the Army and fought for our country.” We asked Ruby what her response was after finding out she placed 3rd out of so many entries. Ruby said, “I was pretty shocked! I didn’t even know until VFW representative Jack Cunningham from the Nampa VFW post showed up at my house. I was really surprised!”
Great job Ruby! We can’t wait to see what your future brings!
Each year more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.
