🎓 Preparing for High School

GEAR UP at Syringa Middle School

High school is an exciting next step. It can also feel a little big or confusing.

At Syringa, GEAR UP helps students build the skills, habits, and confidence they need to feel ready for freshman year.

We start preparing now so students feel confident later.

📘 What Is Different About High School?

High school is different from middle school in a few important ways:

• Classes move faster
• Grades count toward graduation
• Students earn credits for each class they pass
• Attendance matters even more
• Students have more independence and responsibility
• There are more clubs, sports, and leadership opportunities

The good news? Students can start building the skills they need right now.

🧠 Skills We Help Students Build

At Syringa, GEAR UP helps students practice the skills that lead to high school success.

• Using a planner or calendar
• Keeping track of assignments
• Turning work in on time
• Bringing materials to class

✔ Study Habits

• Taking notes
• Preparing for tests
• Managing time wisely
• Asking for help when needed

✔ Goal Setting

• Setting short-term school goals
• Thinking about future careers
• Tracking progress and celebrating growth

✔ Confidence & Self-Advocacy

• Asking teachers questions
• Building positive friendships
• Making responsible choices

🗂️ Choosing High School Classes

In high school, students choose classes that earn credits toward graduation.

Some classes are required. Others are electives that allow students to explore interests like:

• Art
• Music
• Technology
• Career pathways
• Leadership
• Advanced or honors classes

Making thoughtful choices helps students stay on track for graduation and future goals.

GEAR UP helps students understand their options so they can make informed decisions.

📊 What Are Credits?

In high school, students earn “credits” for each class they pass.

To graduate, students must earn a certain number of credits in subjects like:

• English
• Math
• Science
• Social Studies
• Health
• Electives

Building strong habits now helps students succeed when credits begin to count.

🏫 What Students Can Do Now (6th–8th Grade)

Students do not have to know their future career yet. They just need to build strong habits.

Here are simple ways to prepare:

✔ Attend school regularly
✔ Complete assignments on time
✔ Practice reading and math skills
✔ Stay organized
✔ Explore clubs and activities
✔ Try leadership opportunities
✔ Ask for help when needed

Small daily habits make a big difference.
